Weed...Like to see you again.
(I've since been told that making fun of the name 'Weed' while stopping in Weed, California during a punk rock tour can cause the van to break down--apparently this is a very real possibility and a common punk rock superstition!)

A tour diary couldn't possibly describe all our experiences on this tour--California is an vast and bustling place. All I can say is, it was great to know that so many people can be so supportive.--massive thanks go out to the following people :
Lily Chumley for being our badass roadie and California guide
Numbers, the Lowdown, Erase Errata, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and Fast Forward--its nice to know we're not alone out here--thanks to all of you for your amazing music, vitality and hospitality--
everyone at the Sacramento and Santa Cruz houses we played at, Club Hot in Oakland and The Smell in LA, everyone who helped organize shows--
Dave and Indra Numbers, Noel from the Lowdown, the Chumley family, Ilana in LA, for letting us sleep on their floors and sofas
Jeff from KALX for having us on his radio show-
everyone who came to shows and had a good time! I'm sleep deprived, I hope I haven't forgotten anyone!

No thanks to automobile drivers who practice the "California Merge" method of highway merging.

Love, Emergency

Hi, here are some pictures from the Strategy/ Momeraths tour!

Bellingham day 1- all the groups were awesome but the Strategy set was goofed due to breaking equipment! Doh there goes space echo! Artie Smudges Trio, Thanksgiving, The Reeks and the Wrecks, and Momeraths were all great. Bellingham is the city of "subdued excitement". I think this roughly describes the Showoff Gallery. doh! I think I left my notebook there. We didn't know Thanksgiving was going to be there on the same nite, which was fun. Make spaghetti in the middle of the nite in Randi's sister's house. Then get really nervous about crossing into Canada with musical instruments! why is Bellingham the city of subdued excitement. Everyone walks around Bellingham! On the way to B-ham Michael takes pictures of a mullet guy who has super long platinum blond mullet with Tom Selleck moustache driving a convertible. I get worried we'll get beat up even though this is on the freeway.

Vancouver, BC, day -2- no trouble at the border despite all our preparations! vancouver looks like a city from the future and its storming rain with some sun causing an enormous double rainbow. Find the Sugar Refinery: is a vegetarian restaurant in the upstairs of a building on Granville. Super good food. Bands play in front of a piano which Mome uses to play music. Strategy, anxiety, nerves. Then throwdown for people eating dinner. Then Vancouver's Menya (enya for men!!!) throws down, very slowly like Labradford. Oh no a blown fuse! then electricity comes back. Then!!! Momeraths throw down! We are in Canada! it is culturally accelerated. Everyone sleeps in different places. Michael and Joel stay with friend Terence who is a professional GAME TESTER!!! Colleen, Josh, and Howard stay at an artists' studio, but get kicked out early so they buy kinds of candy bars you can't get here, such as Crunchie and Toffee Crisp. Paul & Randi stay with friend Scott (and his cats) who does loscil and the Multiplex Grande. (thank you Scott!!) Next day, walk all around Vancouver. Eat more really good vegetarian food. Canada is familiar and not at the same time. The sugar refinery people are tight like a family. There are photographs and projections everywhere. what a cool city. everyone throws down! go team! on to Seattle.

Seattle day 3- very tired now. back into the US with no problem. Get to Seattle, go straight to the venue. Doh! The Rendez-vous is a very down and out dive bar! Inside is hidden a very small movie theater, which Rex says was DW Griffiths screening room. The room is decrepit and has bad voodoo. I try to get out of playing but Josh insists (whew). Whoa! Guys in Dutch Flat who set up show are from Idaho, and Pullman Washington, via Missoula. I know these guys from the early 90s. Strategy improvises, lots of noise and an elephant march. spin the tempo dial. Then, Recidivist play. they sound kind of like Don Caballero with a Dr. Sampler. Then, momeraths throw down a badass set, but the soundsystem is kind of lousy. Then Dutch Flat play, they are playing ROCK! and they barely need the PA except for vocals. Yeah! Then the Rendez-Vous people try to get everyone to leave. I am glad Josh talks me into playing.

Seattle day 4- sleep in at Randi's parents. call everyone in Seattle to come to the show. meet crew downtown. "we brought cookies from Randi's grandma!" , then, try to find the I-Spy. where is it? Debate the pro's and con's of Seattle trying to find the I-Spy. Which is closed at the time so we go to an art bar upstairs staffed by a Scottish guy who disses portland. Scam drinks! everyone goofing around. We know that Strategy, Momeraths, and Nice Nice (friends from Portland also playing at the show), must form like Voltron at the end. We are nervous. What is the Seattle Improv weekly like? load in. lots of seattle friends arrive! SIL2K guys are super mellow and soundguy is not mad that we have so much weird stuff, and insist on keeping all 3 groups set up at the same time. nice sound system! nice nice do a super nice set! go Portland! at SIL2K, which is the every-monday-improv event we are performing at, they project the names of the groups on the wall while they play. Announcer guy is very eccentric! Then, Strategy set for 15 minutes based on a sample of someone saying "an accident is not the same thing as a mistake" and then Mome gets up one by one. first howard and so there's electronic drums jam for a minute and then here comes Josh and Colleen and Michael and Joel. Strate-Mome ! Then-- Nice Nice come back up STRATE-MOME-NICE! throwdown in Seattle. people are glad we did not rely on frenetic atonal skronk. 8 people from POrtland onstage, and Seattle crews say we have been fun to watch and tasteful. Our two cities at peace (for now.) Then the Greg Sinbaldi trio plays. they are all SICK musicians and everyone takes a solo. it is clear they hear cues at the psychic, advanced level. everyone is stoked about this group. Then, sell CDs, goof around with all our friends for a long time. I talk to Noise guys about doing Noise music. Thanks, SIL2K and its regulars!

end of day 4: bye, Pacific Northwest! Hello, day jobs! (for some of us anyways)
