Entertainment
existed for a short time during the academic year 1995-1996 in Portland, Oregon.
Founded by Dickow, Hamilton, and Roper-Ater shortly after their arrival to Reed
College, the group formed as a platform for testing pop music hypotheses. Heggen
left the group due to 'creative differences', the reason cited which is a common
euphemism for 'not getting along', etc.
The eve of 1996 saw
youth culture immmersed in a cult of kitsch lounge pop, the beginning of a profound
trend to start bands based on historical research and mimicry, and the inflation
of prices of vintage electronic gear. Eschewing the deadpan delivery of groups
of the space- and post- rock varieties, Entertainment incorporated humor and
irony into its arsenal.
One of the primary
reasons for starting the group was to attempt to replicate pop music of various
kinds, most of us just having been improvisors (ie, we had all gotten out of
songwriting duties by being in "jam" bands). We figured that due to
our lack of skills, the "pop" music content we produced would be highly
corrupted, and therefore more interesting.
This 7" single,
the first in Archigramophone's "posthumous reissue" series, is comprised
of the best selections from the privately released cassette, November. This
edition includes liner notes by the group's longtime friend, Zachary Pall of
New Haven, Connecticut. This cassette, as well as documents concerning two live
performances, are the only remaining traces of this mysterious group. They split
in the spring of 1996 for acrimonious reasons.
Where are they now? Paul is busy with many new projectsHe and Michael Hamilton have been in several bands together the most recent of which is One Human Minute. Ellie Roper-Ater has just completed her degree and is about to leave Portland this spring in search of adventure (and a master's degree). She and Michael had a punk band called The Tomorrow with Ozi Friedrich (aka Hazelrah) and Davis Hooker (aka A John Henry Memorial.)
Michael Hamilton is currently part of the collective Meaning Liberation Front.
