Hazelrah,
aka Ozi Friedrich, is a longtime resident of Portland, Oregon, where he has
worked as a bassist in groups such as The Tomorrow and A John Henry Memorial.
This is his first solo release. Hazelrah is grounded in bass, using both direct
and processed samples of the upright throughout every song. Hazelrah departs
from the virtuosic approach to bass-electronic composition, typified by Squarepusher,
to focus instead on the inner sonic properties of the instrument. The compositions
are marked by a use of classical and bop-jazz songforms reconstructed within
the greater tonal range available to the electronic composer. The resulting
music is highly eclectic--the different genres represented are integrated simultaneously
rather than occurring in a (cliched) linear progression.
At the time of release,
Ozi is preparing to depart Portland to work as a volunteer laborer and archivist
at the Arcosanti community in Arizona
(an experimental city-in-construction founded by visionary architect Paolo Soleri.)
currently, Hazelrah has just moved to Brooklyn, where he plans to attend graduate school and rock a laptop at parties.
Ozi is affiliated with the Meaning Liberation Front. He encourages direct correspondance and can be contacted at hazelrah@graffiti.net.
