Nice Nice are the duo of Jason Buehler (guitar) and Mark Shirazi (drums). Nice Nice's orchestral-sounding music is actually completely live. Using a variety of looping- and delay-devices, Buehler creates abstract rhythmic and tonal backdrops for guitar and percussion call-and-response improvisation. Unlike many of their looping-guitar contemporaries, the duo has found a multitude of ways to create shifts, changes and tweaks to the patterns-creating and adjusting all loop source material on the spot without the aid of sampler memory. Shirazi's capability to extrapolate the rhythmic shifts and pattern changes of experimental electronic beat production adds to the group's unique process-the resultant music is more indicative of a collaged, pattern-based electronic system than a rock or jazz aesthetic. This isn't to say that Nice Nice are a 'live group trying to sound electronic'-electronic music is one reference point, but among many others, varying from the dissonance of classic post-punk, to bombastic dub, free-skronk, fusion, and even encompassing forays into the unlikely areas of Balinese Gamelan, extreme noise, and country&western. Holding all these divergent elements in one place is the group's ability to blend and shape their music with characteristic digital jitter, subtle beat-shifting, and chopped instrumental patchwork, and of course their ever-present groove-based pulse.
This CD3 was released as part of the 2nd installment of the archi3 series (along with fellow archifriends Momeraths). It was recorded by Paul Dickow on a questionably-operational minidisc walkman at the Nice Nice rehearsal space, July 4th 2001. Thanks to Magnetic Park Studio for donating the use of their microphones.
The group is currently based in Portland. They can be contacted c/o the label .
